Merlot is one of the most popular red varietals in the world, and for good reason. Soft, velvety, and sophisticated, this wine often needs less aging than other reds before it's ready to impress.
In a word, this wine is smooth. Merlot is soft, fruity, and elegant. Juicy plum and raspberry combine with savoury spice, smooth tannins, and oak for a lush, polished texture. The dry finish will leave you wanting more, and you'll be reaching for another glass before you know it.
When you taste a typical Stags Leap District wine, you start to understand what all the fuss is about. They are simply some of the best wines that the Napa Valley has to offer.
The district is located in the eastern portion of the Napa Valley. The rock facades of the palisades reflect the heat of the sun onto the vineyards below, causing temperatures to rise more quickly than in neighboring vineyards. As afternoon draws to a close, the hills funnel the cool, marine air flowing north from the San Pablo Bay through the Stags Leap District corridor. The cooling effect of this breeze, coupled with nighttime air drainage off the mountains and hills, means lower nighttime temperatures. This allows the grapes to achieve an excellent balance of acid and sugar and also minimizes the threat of frost. The end result is a longer growing season of warm days and cool nights, ideal for many grape varietals.
Merlot drinks well by itself, but is really at its best when paired with foods. Beef and chicken are great protein choices, especially when grilled. Cheese options include brie, cheddar, and Gorgonzola. Californian Merlot is also a great choice for rich desserts like strawberry cheesecake or chocolate brownies.
